Gold was produced in supernova nucleosythesis, from the collision of neutron stars and was present in the dust from which the Solar System formed. Most of the gold that is in the Earths crust and mantle was delivered to Earth by asteroid impact during the Late Heavy Bombardment , about 4 billion years ago.
